The Healthy Habit of Drinking Water

Introducing Monica Fink… One of the Nation’s Premier Certified Holistic Health Practitioners.

Statistics regarding water and the human body:

• Water comprises 75% of our total body

• Water comprises 85% of our brain

• Water comprises 75% of our muscles

• Water comprises 83% of our blood

In addition, water plays a vital role in almost every function of the body, from regulating our temperature, assisting in nutrient absorption, cushioning our joints and converting food to energy. It is no wonder that we can survive weeks without food but only days without water. The signs of dehydration include headaches, fatigue or lack of energy, difficulty concentrating or remembering, aches and pains, and aging skin.  Recent medical research has even begun to look at chronic long-term dehydration as a critical factor in the development of Alzheimer’s disease.

Under ordinary circumstances, the body expels up to a gallon of water every twenty-four hours. What do you think happens when you don’t replenish that supply? Your body experiences a drought condition! Not only do Americans not consume enough plain water, we consume far too much caffeine and alcohol which are very dehydrating. Even though many popular drinks contain water (tea, coffee, artificially sweetened drinks), they do not replace the need for plain water and they can add to the problem of dehydration. However, the water content found in fresh fruits and vegetables is very hydrating to the body.

Recommendations for water intake vary depending on a variety of factors including a person’s age, size and activity level. The climate and altitude can have an impact as well. “Across the board” recommendations of 8-10 glasses of water per day can leave part of the population adequately hydrated while many others would experience dehydration at this level. If you are an active person living in a dry climate, a gallon of water per day is a good recommendation and one that I give to every one of my fitness and health coaching clients. Many people experience an adjustment period getting used to drinking a gallon per day but soon find it simply becomes a part of their lifestyle just like any other healthy habit. I recommend purchasing a reusable container that is enjoyable and practical and holds 32 ounces. Fill it up four times per day to equal one gallon. Personal tip: I find using one with a straw helps! So drink up everyone….and be well.
