In The Heart of North Texas, There’s a Lady Who’s ‘Totally Addicted’ …to the Right Thing!

When we think of iconic women of the beauty industry, names like Elizabeth Arden, Madam C.J. Walker, Coco Chanel, Estee’ Lauder and Mary Kay Ash all come to mind. These women have blazed the trail for a new generation of female entrepreneurs who are making a name for themselves within the Beauty Industry of today. But in the hustle and bustle of the business world, many people never get to know the story behind the women they see behind the counter. What about her childhood, where did she come from? What were some of the earlier influences in her life, what drives her to accomplish her goals, ambitions and dreams? What does she see in the future for her business?

Earlier this month, we were able to have an up-close and personal opportunity to speak with a lady who is blazing her own trail. Her name is Cathy Cobb and she has developed a line of beauty products that are out of this world! The name of her line of products is called ‘Totally Addicted’ and during our time with her, we asked her a few questions thought you’d love to hear the answers.

Q: Who is Cathy Cobb?
CC: Well, first and foremost I am a wife and mother of five.  At the age of nineteen I married my husband of now twenty-two years and our children range from the ages of 11 to 21.  I was born in California, but was brought up primarily in New Mexico and Texas; where I was the typical small town girl that went to public schools and had hard-working parents. I wasn’t born with a silver spoon in my mouth and have worked since I was thirteen. As a little girl my mother, who was extremely creative by the way, never once hindered me from being creative.  At the age of ten I began using my mother’s sewing machine and remember later painting our house and rearranging furniture. Through all of that my mother never once said, “Cathy, don’t do that”.  Growing up, Art was my favorite subject, and for some reason I have always wanted to create things.

Q: Did the fact that you got married at an early age hinder you from continuing in your creative journey?
CC: No not at all. All throughout my girl’s lives, I have sewn and made clothes for them. I was fortunate that I didn’t have to work outside of the home when they were growing up.  I was actually the wife who wanted power tools for Mother’s Day or my Birthday!  I guess I’m not the typical woman.  I began making crafts while my husband was in college and, ironically, it was there that I first thought, “Hmm… I could actually make money at this!”  It was then I began to do craft shows, festivals, and eventually started renting space in booths to sell my hand-made craft products.

Q: What does Cathy Cobb the businesswoman have as a core driving force?
CC: I love the creative process. It’s something that I like to do, not just for me, but in terms of helping someone else feel a sense of enjoyment with our products.

Q: The name of your line of products is quite interesting, where did it come from?
CC: We created a business two years ago that we call Totally Addicted.  Not so much that people would become addicted to our products, but more so because I became addicted to creating the products and the whole process that it involves. People will sometimes ask me ‘Why do you do it…?’ but little do they realize that I am just ‘totally addicted’ to helping people look and feel their very best. I can’t seem to help myself!

Q: How did you first get started?
CC: I have always been interested in the concept of handmade soap making, but was a little fearful because of some of the chemical components involved.  We went on a vacation one year and while there, we went into a small little shop and all that I saw were handmade soaps. From that moment I was determined to do it myself.   After returning home, the following weekend I bought the materials I needed and made my first batch of handmade soap. But then I had so many products, I began to think I could start marketing them and generate revenue.

Q: So you’ve created this line of product called Totally Addicted. What are some of the other products within this line?
CC: The main product in the Totally Addicted line is handmade soap. As for other products in the Totally Addicted line, we now have added body oils, lip balm, solid lotion bars, dog soap, dry shampoo, shaving soaps for men, body sprays, roll on perfumes, bath salts, and more. But the whole concept of making soaps had a lot to do with my research regarding chemicals. The more I read about certain products and the more I learned from the material data sheets I studied, it made me realize how harmful some of the over-the-counter products can be to our body and over-all health. Many of them are filled with known carcinogens, hormone receptors, and other ingredients that have negative effects on our body. Our skin is our biggest organ and whatever we put on it is absorbed in the blood stream.

As a result of the information I was able to acquire, I became more and more obsessed with everything being almost completely natural and organic.  Because there was so much on the market that was harmful to the public I wanted to create something different. At the time my father-in-law was dying with cancer and I had just lost my brother. Everything going on in our lives and everything I was reading compelled me even more to educate myself about how I could help people use better products that were not filled with unhealthy or harmful ingredients. There’s no ‘junk’ in the stuff that I make!

Q: Was there anyone from the medical industry that you spoke to about what you were learning?
CC: Actually, several years ago while having a conversation about breast cancer with my Gynecologist, I asked him… “Why do you think there is such an increase in cancer in recent history?” He said to me, “It’s because of what we’re putting in our bodies and on our bodies.” From that conversation, I had a sense of assuredness that at least there’s someone in the medical profession that understands what I’m sensing and can confirm everything that I had been studying and learning. So today, while I absolutely love making products for other people, more importantly, it’s good to know that my products are actually good for people.

Q: Are you a product of the product?
CC: Yes I am! I don’t use anything else. As a matter of fact, I won’t even put anything out in the marketplace that I and my family haven’t used and tested. I regularly give out samples to my friends and family to constantly get feedback from them. I want to know what does and doesn’t works for people.

Q: What is the future vision for Cathy Cobb and your ability to serve people with what you love to do?
CC: I would eventually like to have a stand-alone shop of my own. But my goal is really to become big enough where I can employ women who want to get back on their feet; women who are single moms, women who need mentoring and/or women who need someone in their lives who can help bring out the creative dream in them. I don’t want to get too big, but I want to get big enough so that I am able to really, truly help some people.

Q: If there was one thing that you wanted people to know about Cathy Cobb, what would it be?
CC: I do it because I care!
